QRP. 111,000 kilometres per watt with WSPR

Well I had a bit of fun this evening with WSPR. VK4ZBV and I have been hooking up a bit via WSPR. He transmitting, and me listening on WSPR. Today I suggested his signal was so good that he might try at 0.5 W which he did, and I still spotted him at -9 dB SNR. So he then transmitted a 10mW signal which I picked up via my 160 meter skyloop.

0.01watts over 1110 kilometres, thats 111,000 kilometres per watt !

Todays Contacts and WSPR over 14,000 kilometers

This morning I woke early and did some work in the office. As usual, I had the IC703 HF set running, listening to the CW session. I am getting better at deciphering morse, but still can’t do it at the speed the guys on the Gnarly Net can. I will have to keep training.

VK4AAH called upĀ  on the 2 meter repeater on his way to work, so we chewed the rag for a while about all sorts of things.

In the evening I tuned into the Mackay Net again. Other stations on the net and their signal reports were-
VK4LH 59
VK4NFZ 59 =10dB
VK4HBB 59 +10
VK4FUQ 59 +20
VK4HPT 50 +10
VK4W Mobile 35
VK4AJL 59 +20

I spotted a VK2 station today using WSPR on 10m, so obviously there was a sporadic E opening today on 10m. I am right now running WSPR (receive only) on 30m, below is the log.

QRP 12448 kilometers with just 1 watt!

Low power operations of vast distances can be a fun challenge. Today I tried out a new way of operating, a digital mode known as WSPR. My license doesn’t allow me to transmit on digital modes yet, but I can listen. Below is a transcript from the webserver for WSPR. I heard WY7USA from USA a total of 12448 kilometers- he was using just 1 watt!
