Learning Morse Code- VK Beginners Net

The more time I spend learning morse code, the more I think that I should set up a site to assist others to learn.

I have quite a few ideas that I think I will share here initially.

There are lots of tools to assist learners, but one of the biggest problems is finding them and finding people to assist. I’d like to start a CW Elmers site where people can learn with the guidance of others. This site would list skeds, resources and other things of assistance.

So here is the beginning of VK CW Elmer

Online Morse Code Learning

A great place to start learning is here http://lcwo.net. Once you have learned all of the letters and numbers, start on the morse machine which will give you words to receive.

You can also use various forms of software to assist with learning. Some of them are listed here.

Cody Morris– This one worked well for me but some people don’t like the method.

More to Come

In the meantime, if you have learned the letters and numbers but are too afraid to come on air, the best way is to join other beginners or Elmers on a net especially designed for beginners. There are lots of these in the USA, but I found it difficult to find any here in VK, so I am going to propose the following.

VK Elmers calling Frequencies and Nets

Daily practice is essential so the plan is to allow daily practice in a part of each band that will not attract normal CW ops and allow check in by SSB.

VK CW Beginners Net (Tues, Thurs,Sat) 0930 utc on 7255 kHz.- This net will work in a similar fashion to the 7130 DX net. Net Control will ask for check-ins on SSB. Once all stations are checked in on SSB, net control will ask for anyone who wants to make a contact to call. Once all of those who wish to make a call are listed, net control will go through the list. While still using SSB, you can name which station you would like to contact- net control then allows you to do so. You can exchange reports and have a short QSO. Mistakes are no problem, and we will all have fun.

At the end of the calls session, net control will ask if anyone wants to send a single word or sentence for the rest of us to copy. If not, then net control will send a small passage of text for us all to copy then read it back on SSB.

Stations are expected to reply at the same speed as the initial station sends. I will kick off this new net on Tuesday 30 October 2012. I am a beginner at CW, so if I can do it, so can you.

Due to my extensive commitments and my personal health issues, I have requested someone else take on this net, but that has not happened. I still believe in it, so I am prepared to consider a once per week net. Say tuned for more information.
