Towards Better Audio and Better Organisation in the Shack

Yesterday I began reorganising the shack to allow for the fitting of some audio equipment that will allow me to share a high quality microphone with several radios. I also began construction of  a key interface to allow me to share two keys with two radios and my old Hallicrafters TO Keyer.

The microphone is a Heil PR781. The audio from this microphone will go to a small Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer, where it can be adjusted before being sent to the appropriate radio.  The radio Rx audio will then be returned to the mixer for playback through a set of monitor speakers  that will be purchased in the future if finances ever allow 🙂 I can not afford the lovely Heil microphone boom, so I have used an old microphone gooseneck screwed to the desk with some padding in between mount and desk to isolate from computer fan noise.

The key interface has phone jacks for each radio  in to which can be plugged a key. This will save the search at the back of each radio when changing keys. It also has a connection direct to the FT101 for a straight key, or connection via the Hallicrafters keyer for a paddle. This is switchable with a small toggle switch.

There are several computers on the radio desk, 1 x eeePC running APRS and security camera software, one eeePC running Ham Radio Deluxe and a Mac mini running MacLogger DX and Cocoa Modem etc. At present these share a screen and keyboard via a VPN switch but it is troublesome with Windows 7 so I am about to switch to a software based solution, Synergy. The keyboard and mouse have been relocated to a position in the centre of the radio desk. The screen will be moved to a central position as well.
